Alhambra

The Alhambra was built in the 13th and 14th centuries by the last Muslim rulers in Spain. They were known as the Nasrid dynasty.The palace attracts millions of visitors every year, with its beautiful, ornate architecture and stunning Generalife gardens. One of the most special parts is the Patio de los Leones.

Design a new tile for the Patio de los Leones.

These tiles are called azulejos, which comes from the Arabic word for polished stones.

Look out for the emblem of the Nasrid dynasty: a hand with a star or flower and motto.

Walls, columns and doorways are decorated with Arabic inscriptions: poems, scripture and blessings that reflect the culture and beliefs of the Nasrid dynasty.

In Islamic tradition, shapes and patterns are used to symbolise endless creation.

Cool colours and designs help create a calming atmosphere, making the palace a peaceful retreat in the hot Andalusian climate.
