Location of Tunisia

Tunisia, officially the Republic of Tunisia, is the northernmost country in Africa. It is a part of the Marghreb region in North Africa , and is surrounded by Algeria to the west, Libya to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the north.

Of the languages of Tunisia, Arabic is the sole official language according to the Tunisian Constitution. A significant portion of the population speak French, which was the common language of business and adminstration during the French rule in Tunisia. Eastern Berber languages are still spoken by some Tunisian minority groups (which is about a few thousand).

DATA:

Of the languages spoken at home in Tunisia, about 99.4% speak Arabic (93.3% speak Tunisian dialect while 6.1% speak other dialects), 0.4% speak Berber languages, and 0.2% speak French, which is because French is used in buisness and work other than at home.

While French is not Tunisia’s first language, Tunisia is nonetheless a French-speaking country because it was a French protectorate for 75 years, and because Tunisians learn French in school and use it in the workplace. Tunisia became a French protectorate (the weaker of two countries that is in a relationship with a stronger country) in 1881. It happened when some Tunisian tribe men went into Algeria (French terrirory) allegedly, which gave France the occasion to invade Tunisia and impose the Treaty of Bardo. This allowed France to occupy the country's military.

WHY IS FRENCH A SPOKEN LANGUAGE?

Women wear a Sefsari. The Sefsari is a large scarf that is made from yellow or white silk. It covers the entire body of the Tunisian woman.

The most popular male costume is the Jebba. It is still worn by some men. The Jebba is made of silk and wool. It covers almost the whole body as the only parts that will be showing are the forearms and the calves.

Couscous, called kosksi, is the national dish of Tunisia, and can be prepared in many ways. It is cooked in a special kind of double boiler called a kiskas in Arabic or couscoussière in French.
