HENRY VII
Henry VII of England, 1457-1509, was an important English ruler who ruled from 1485 until he died.He was a member of the Tudor dynasty, he succeeded to the throne after the victory at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, marking the end of the Wars of the Roses, a dynastic conflict between the houses of Lancaster and York. He married Elizabeth of York: To consolidate his legitimacy to the throne and unite the houses of Lancaster and York, he married Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV of York. During his reign, Henry VII searched to strengthen royal authority and stabilize England after decades of instability. These efforts contributed to the expansion of British interests in the Americas. Henry VII died in 1509 and was succeeded by his son, Henry VIII, one of the most noted monarchs in English history for his many reforms, including the breakup with the Catholic Church and the creation of the Anglican Church.
Henry VIII was born in 1509 and in the same year he came to the throne. He was known as the ‘Golden prince’ because he was good-looking, sporting ability and educated. The authority proclaimed him the Supreme Head of the English Church: then he wanted to control the Roman Church but his reign wasn’t powerful enough. He married six times, the first woman was Catherine of Aragon, their marriage lasted 24 years, despite this they only had a female child, Mary, so they hadn’t an heir. Henry wanted to annul the marriage, meanwhile he had a pregnant mistress: Anne Boleyn. In 1533 he officially divorced Catherine of Aragon and married Anne Boleyn who gave him only a daughter: Elizabeth. 1536 Anne Boleyn was beheaded, and then Henry went on to have 4 more wives. Only his fourth wife, Jane Seymour, gave him a son: Edward. His children successively became King Edward VI, Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I.
HENRY VIII
MARY I
After Henry VIII’s death, his son, Edward VI took over even though he was only ten, but when he died, he was succeeded by Mary I. She had always been rejected by her father who always wanted a male heir. She has never been loved by the people because she tried to restore the papal obedience and her marriage with Philip II of Spain. She is known even nowadays as ‘Bloody Mary’ because of her persecution and burning of protestants (about 300 people): they were burnt at the stake during her reign. Her life was terribly tragic and sad, she died in 1558 childless, for this she was deserted by her husband because she didn’t give him an heir. She was succeeded by Elizabeth I.
Elizabeth I of England was one of the most famous rulers in English history. She was born on 1533 to Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII of England. After the death of her father, her mother was executed and the young Elizabeth was declared illegitimate and deprived of her rights to the succession.
Elizabeth I ascended the throne in 1558, becoming the Queen of England and Ireland. Her reign lasted until her death in 1603. His reign is known as the Elizabethan Age and was a period of great prosperity, cultural growth and maritime expansion for England.
ELIZABETH I
Elizabeth I is also famous for her support of the arts and literature, with the Elizabethan era producing famous writers such as William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. Elizabeth I died in 1603, without direct heirs. She was succeeded by James VI of Scotland.
EDWARD VI
He reigned the King from 1547 to 1553 . He was born in the 1537 and he became king at the age of nine, so he hadn’t the capability to prevail over an entire kingdom and his uncle took the reins of government: - Duke of Somerset, Edward Seymour - Duke of Northumberland, John Dudley In his only 6 years of reign there was an important change in religion: it was under this pressure that in 1549 Edward VI promulgated the Book of Common Prayer, becoming the basis of the Anglican Communion and is still used nowadays. He died in 1553, at the young age of 15.
