Organizing Items and Categories

Overall Grade: Default Organization

  • Blackboard Ultra has many default Grade Categories that may be irrelevant to your course.
Why should you care?
  • By default Blackboard Ultra equally distributes the 100% across ALL Grade Categories.
    • This means, even if you do NOT have any graded items in the Homework Category, it will default still assign it a %.
  • By default, items nested within a Grade Category will receive equal % of the assigned weight.
    • Example, if the category Tests is worth 20% and there are two items nested within, each item will be worth 10%.
      • However, if one test is worth 5% and the other is worth 15%, the items will need to be unlinked from the Grade Category.
  • Here we suggest that you unlink all items from the Grade Categories so they are visible and easy to assign the appropriate weight.

Overall Grade MUST Total 100%

When setting up the Overall Grade in Blackboard Ultra, you can ONLY save what you have set up WHEN it adds up to 100%. Therefore, it is best to have all assessment items created (with or without content) in the Content page before setting up the Overall Grade in the Gradebook section.
