  • Classroom management model
  • Inner discipline is similar to self-discipline. It is behaving without direction from others.
  • Inner discipline has to be taught to and developed in students.
  • Teaching students inner discipline should be a main goal of educators.
  • Teachers should be giving positive messages.

What is inner discipline

I know you can handle it.

You are very important to me.

You are cared for.

I trust in you.

You are listened to.

I belive in you.

6 Critical life messages

Kids are worth the effort (time, energy, resources).

Students self-worth should not be sacrificed or compromised to manage their behavior.

Help them trust themselves and learn self-discipline and take responsibility for their actions.

Kids are worth it.

4 steps of discipline

The student keeps their dignity.

Provide options for solving the problem

The student will take ownership of the situation/problem.

The student will see what they should have done.

  • Focus goes to factors surrounding the situation
  • Focus doesn't go to aduts discipline

Why in these steps?

  • Discipline is not punishment.
  • Punishment is adult driven, and is driven by power.
  • Punishment produces resentment and anger.
  • It includes isolation, shaming, and embarrassment.
  • Discipline addresses the reality of the situation and allows the child to self-correct.
  • Rewards should not be given to increase positive behavior!

Punishment VS. Discipline

Consequences should be natural if possible.
  • If natural consequences are not dangerous for students then students should experience them.
  • Example: Child does not want to wear a coat. Child gets cold when they go outside (Natural Consequence).

Is Inner Discipline Effective?

Yes, if suggested philosophical stances are held

Teacher's roles & responsibilities

  • Trust that teaching students to self-discipline is better than the teacher disciplining the students.
  • Believe that it is the teacher’s responsibility to teach students to accept the ownership of their problems.
  • Use natural consequences or real world consequences as much as possible; when those do not work, reasonable consequences should be used
  • Avoid harsh, physical, and overbearing punishments

  • Applies to MOST situations
  • Promotes self-discipline
