EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER

THE RING OF FIRE - is the long chain of volcanoes and other technically active structures that surround the pacific ocean

WE ALL KNOW THAT THE PHILIPPINES IS SITUATED IN A PLACE WHERE PLATE TECTONICS ARE VERY EVIDENT.

HAZARD MAPS - shows you the areas in our country that are affected by grown , or vulnerable to a particular hazard or natural disasters

POLITICAL MAP - illustrates the provinces and charted cities boundaries with their capitals and national capital.

POlitical map & geophysical HAZARD MAP

LINE - means the provincial boundary between two locations and the risk of an area to a certain hazard or particular natural disaster is categorized into four.

  • HIGH
  • MEDIUM
  • LOW
  • NO RISK

familiarize the legend found in each map...

‘SEISMOLOGIST - a scientist who studies earthquake and seismic waves.

‘SEISMOLOGY - is the study of earthquakes and seismic waves that move through and around the earth.

‘EARTHQUAKES - are natural geological phenomena caused by sudden and rapid movement of large volumes of rock. The violence and destruction caused by earthquakes are the result of the rupture and slippage along fractures of the earth's crust called faults.

Surface Waves are of a lower frequency than body waves and are easily distinguished on a seismogram though they arrive after body waves. It is the surface that is almost entirely responsible for he damage and destruction associated with earthquakes.

Surface Waves

Body Waves

- can only move along he surface of the planet like cripples in water

There are several different kinds of seismic waves and they aall move in different ways.

THE 2 MAIN TYPES OF WAVES

- can travel through the earth's inner layers

S - Wave

P - Wave

SECONDARY WAVES move in a direction perpendicular to the direction energy is traveling in or perpendicular or the direction of wave propagation.

PRIMARY WAVES consist of a compressional or shortening motion and a dilational or expanding motion that both lie along a line. .

types of body waves

Rayleigh waves, which have rock particle motions that are very similar to the motions of water particles in ocean waves.

Love waves, which are shear waves trapped near the surface

Rayleigh Waves

types of SURFACE waves

According to the Manila Observatory and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, in the mapping of the Philippine vulnerability to environmental disasters seismicity or geographic and historical distribution of earthquake events is all over the country except in the Palawan Region which is the safest in the country due to its very low risk in a geological disaster like earthquakes.

La Union and Pangasinan are prone to earthquakes especially the deep focused ones due to the Manila trench. Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental have earthquake hazards due to the Philippine trench and nearby active faults.
