What does the acronym "CLIL" mean?

CLIL is a term introduced in 1994 by David Marsh from Finland
CLIL can be seen as an umbrella term which may refer to any situation in which L2 is used as a tool in the learning of a non-language subject in which both language and subject have a joint role" ( David Marsh)

It is the teaching of a subject such as Geography, Science, or History through English to learners whose first language is not English.
CLIL is a dual- focused educational approach

-Language is used to learn as well to communicate- It is the subject matter which determines the language needed to learn - Subject is taught in simple easily comprehensible ways, using diagrams, illustrations, graphs, highlighted terms.

BASIC CLIL CONCEPTS

- Content - Progression in knowledge, skills and understanding related to specific elements of a defined curriculum. (It should not repeat the content learntin other lessons!) - Communication - Using language to learn and learning to use language. Language does not follow the grammatical progression found in language-learning settings. - Cognition - Developing thinking skills in class. During CLIL lessons, students are inclined to face challenges and therefore build reasoning, creative thinking, and evaluating skills. - Culture - is also known as citizenship. It is about the cultural background that students get in touch with.
