tHE PARTHENON
An engineering masterpiece
The Parthenon was built with a total of 42 columns of different styles and colors. With the passing of the years, these colors slowly faded and disappeared.
Regardless of the religion of its occupiers, the Parthenon has stood the test of time as a legendary construction
In 1687, the Parthenon was extensively damaged in the greatest catastrophe to befall it in its long history. The Ottoman Turks fortified the Acropolis and used the Parthenon to store gunpowder. On September 26th, a Venetian mortar round, fired from the Hill of Philopappus, blew up the store of gunpowder, and the building was partly destroyed.
Construction began in 447 BC and was completed in 438 BC. It took only 9 years, a testament to the Greek's construction abilities. It was originally dedicated to the goddess Athena, and a large statue of her stood in the center of the temple.
