About us
Université de Hearst
At first glance
We are the Université de Hearst. We dream of innovation in the world of education. To this day, we are a francophone university that rethinks the future of post-secondary education in Canada. At Université de Hearst success is measured differently. We know there are as many students as there are ways to learn. We adapt to each and every one of our students and rethink success one course at a time. We are firm believers that a university must be, in every aspect, a center for excellence and innovation. We believe it must also be an active partner for the communities it serves. Students come to us for personal and professional growth and inspiration, to become active and efficient members of a fast-paced developing world, as well as problem-solvers facing the many challenges and changes in our societies.
Mission
Université de Hearst defines itself as a Francophone learning ecosystem, as innovative as it is engaging. It is intended to be a breeding ground for actors and talents who contribute positively to the improvement of their environment, in a complex world where valuing the inclusion of everyone is essential. To this end, it prioritizes:
- supporting the development of each person;
- developing human and professional skills;
- pursuing a personal and collective quest;
- practising increasingly independent thinking.

Quick facts
Partnerships
Université de Hearst sees itself as a team player in Ontario's post-secondary industry. This is why we are developing business relationships with numerous partners across the globe.
Block plan (since 2014)
3 campuses
Block-delivered courses are a unique and dynamic way to learn. A block is mainly 3 weeks devoted to a specific subject, with one 3-hour lesson per day, normally four days per week, including assessments. Acquiring new knowledge, one course at a time in blocks, makes it easier to integrate and consolidate the knowledge students need to acquire. In North America, only a dozen post-secondary institutions offer block courses, and Université de Hearst is the only one to do so in French.
Our campuses are located in communities where the French-language is valued and well-established in northeastern Ontario : Hearst, Kapuskasing and Timmins.
Student diversity
As of September 2023, students from 15 countries are attending Université de Hearst. Diversity is part of our DNA as we continue to value it in every aspect of our students and faculty members every day life. Our new International Office has been developed to better integrate and serve students from all over the world in their academic journey, as well as into our communities, businesses and organizations.
Affiliated institute
Our affiliated institute Le Groupe Innovanor strengthens business and community partnerships by creating innovative solutions that combines knowledge and action. This new insight is then transferred to businesses, organizations and community members, primarily throughout Northeastern Ontario, but also to official language minority communities in Ontario and Canada.

block course delivery
Unlike the traditional semester, in which a person takes five courses simultaneously, the block course format allows students to take one course at a time. Our semesters also consist of five courses, which are offered one block at a time, allowing students to concentrate on one subject and move on to the next when completed.
Experiential learning in all programs
Experiential learning approach immerses students directly in a work environment, giving them the ability to learn, develop knowledge and skills in a real life setting.
Mandatory internships in all programs
Over 20 % of all employers in our region are members of our network and have a formal collaboration agreement with us.
Recruitment : Internationalisation and extra-regional
Université de Hearst’s first international cohort consisted of 1 student from Ivory Coast and was welcomed in September of 2013. From that year on, our recruitment efforts in international and extra-regional areas have been increasingly successful. As of September 1st 2023, 71 % of our student body consists of international students.
Interdisciplinarity : think outside the box
Interdisciplinary studies are designed to broaden students’ skills by training them to go beyond the boundaries of a single concentration. Their thought process evolves to cross boundaries, giving them the tools to analyze principles, methods and skills across all disciplines.
