The Uruguayan chivito was invented in Punta del Este, Uruguay, at a restaurant called "El Mejillón Bar" in 1946.One day a woman from northern Argentina arrived at the bar and ordered goat meat to eat. The restaurant owner, Antonio Carbonaro, did not have this meat. But he had an idea! He used a beef fillet steak instead. He put the juicy beef in a bun with mayonnaise and ham. He called this new sandwich “Chivito”. The woman ate it and liked it so much! Carbonaro decided to include this dish in the menu and it was a boom! He sold hundreds of chivitos per day. Nowadays Chivito is the national dish of Uruguay. It is a sandwich of sliced beefsteak, mozzarella, ham, tomatoes, mayonnaise and black or green olives. A chivito also includes bacon and fried or hard-boiled eggs. It is served in a bun, often accompanied by French-fried potatoes. The Canadian Chivito is a variation of the sandwich which includes more ingredients. You can also order Chivito on a platter with French fries and Russian salad.
