SETTING

Billy Elliot is an 11-year-old boy who lives with his father Jackie, brother Tony and grandmother. His mother Jenny died two years ago from a serious illness. Billy's father forces his son to practice boxing, but the boy prefers dance but comes up against various prejudices. His only friend is Michael, a schoolmate and neighbor. Part of the gym where Billy boxing is used for a dance class, Billy curiously observes the teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson. Seeing Billy's fascinated gaze, she invites him to try a few steps and, finally, invites him to come back. The boy thus begins to take lessons, but pretends to continue attending boxing lessons. But when the miners, including Billy's father and brother, go on strike, their economic situation begins to worsen. Two months go by and George Watson, the boxing coach, informs Billy's father that the boy hasn't attended lessons for a long time. Dad follows the boy and finds him at dance lessons. As soon as he sees him, he yells for him to go home. So Billy goes to explain to his teacher that he can no longer continue. However, Mrs. Wilkinson does not give up and she reveals to the student that she is preparing him to enter the Royal Ballet School in London. Billy thus continues to train in secret. But on the day set for the audition, Billy is forced to go with his father to pick up Tony, who has been arrested by the police. The boy therefore does not show up for the appointment with Mrs. Wilkinson, who goes to Billy's house for explanations. The angry father and brother scolded Billy. On Christmas night Billy and Michael go to the gym, put on a tutu and the two friends dance together for fun. But suddenly, the two boys are surprised by Jackie and the boxing coach while they are dancing: Billy continues to dance in front of his father. After seeing her son give vent to his passion, this time Jackie understands that becoming a very good dancer; at this point she decides to accompany him personally to the audition in London. To be able to afford the trip, she joins the workers who go to the mine to work against the provisions of the union. At the same time, however, Jackie has not spoken to her son Tony who, seeing him together with the traitors, becomes furious; Billy and Jackie leave for London. The audition at the Royal Ballet School, however, doesn't seem to go very well: the examiners observe the choreography prepared by Billy perplexed. The boy leaves convinced that he has wasted time. A few weeks later, however, the envelope arrives at home with the result: Billy has been admitted. At the age of eleven Billy left his family and left alone for London. 14 years later, his father and brother travel to London to attend the ballet in which Billy performs as the protagonist: Swan Lake.
