Our senses gather information from the environment, but our brain can´t process everything at once due to the overwhelming amount of stimuli, so we unconsciously select certain stimuli on which we focus on.
Once you have selected your stimuli, your brain will organize the information to give a meaning to it. This step involves grouping and categorizing different information to make sense of it.
In this step, we will give a meaning to the organized stimuli, we will make sense of what we perceive based on our personal beliefs and experiences.
Our personal interest, needs, and goals influence what we find relevant. so each person will focus on what is relevant to them.
Our brain will usually focus in what´s new, or different from what we are used to so new or unusual things are likely to be noticed with ease
Our past experiences and expectations call our attention, so if we are looking to see something in particular, we are more likely to see it.
We are going to group similar stimuli together because they share common characteristics.
We like to perceive continuous and smooth patterns rather than abrupt changes.
Our braing will fill in for missing information, to be able to complete familiar patterns or shapes.
Our individual beliefs and attitudes shape how we assing significance to stimuli
Depending on our mood, we can perceive certain stimuli, and we may give them different meanings depending on whether we are happy or mad.
The circumstances surrounding the stimuli affect how we interpret them. The same word can have different meanings depending on the context of the conversation.
