Le prétérit s’emploie quand il y a une rupture avec le présent.On utilise le prétérit parce que :

VALEUR GENERALE

• C’est un fait révolu et daté.
• Il y a un repère passé explicite, (yesterday / last night / last week / last month / last summer)
• C’est le temps du récit.
• Il y a un repère fictif (if / suppose)

Interruption d’un événement en cours dans le passé.The Titanic was crossing the Atlantic when it hit an iceberg.

Succession d’actions, de faits, dans un contexte passé.He heard a strange noise, therefore he went to the living room and saw his dog running after the cat.
