GOVERNMENT

The government was responsible for introducing the idea of a new airport, mid-1960s, and in 2018, due to activists, they canceled the proyect.

They're in charge of doing the government's dirty work. They entered the activist camp with armed vehicles and helicopters and they're monitoring if people leave the community or not.

Actors involved in the development of the TAZ

These are the people who never gave up and who live of the premises of the construction site (Notre-Dame-Des-Landes). They fought so the government couldn't build the airport and decentralize the economy.

Some stakeholders made the airport construction seem like the government was "promoting the public interest". However, other stakeholders organized an awareness campaign, and they were ready to defend the zone when the police came with barricades.

Zone à Défendre indeed reflects many aspects of the transformation paradigm, particularly with its community-based nature, the challenge to dominant systems, the progression into alternative ways of living, and the sustainable interaction it manages with the environment. However, it also differs with the objectives of the transformation paradigm. This anarchist group aims to protect a certain geographic area from being modified by public construction projects, instead of having a business focus. It doesn't promote stakeholder engagement because the type of engagement they have towards the authorities is often confrontational. Zone À Défendre doesn't have performance indicators to measure success, their way of measuring this success is simply by delaying the development projects in the area they are protecting.

Ecological thoughts

The Mixed Airport Union is born, which brings together the local authorities (Region, Department, Metropolis, Municipalities, etc.). He defends this project considering that it has an economic bet ("3,000 jobs must be created") and an ecological one ("an end to the inconvenience at the gates of Nantes").
