Old-New Information Patterns

Writing Skill

As an important method for creating cohesion when developing a paragraph is to used old-new information patterns. This means that the first (new) part of a sentence (usually the subject) is linked to the (old) information in the previous sentence. Look at the exaxmple. The colors present the same ideas.

Use this or these as pronouns or determiners or the article the to refer back to the previous ideas.

Use words such as some, another, other, and the first/second/third to create lists.

Repeat keywords and ideas from previous sentences in the subject

When you use old-new information patterns, follows these steps:

Texting has become so integral to student life that they simply text even if it is against the rules. Texting in class concerns many instructions, and a number of approaches have been attempted to control this behavior. Some instructors have appealed to good manners. Other professors have used the incentive of grades, whereas others have tried punishments. Evidently, these attempts to control texting in class have been largely ineffective.
