Unpacking Shakespeare's notorious Theater

Although we read Shakespeare in class and focus on the story, the purpose surrounding Shakespeare's writing, the play's historic atmosphere, and the specific genre it falls under helps us to gain deeper understanding.

Who was Caesar?

Julius Caesar was a renowned general, politician and scholar in ancient Rome who conquered the vast regions of land. From his rule, the end of the Roman Republic began when he became dictator of the Roman Empire. Despite his amazing military skill, his political lead, and his popularity with the common poeople of Rome, his rule was cut short when adversarys threatened by his individual rising power tothat threatened the establihsment of their own political power. Thus, leading to the brutal assassination of Caesar.

What is a Tragedy?

Shakespeare's works are split into one of three categories: comedies, tragedies, and histories. Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, is a tradegy as it focus' on human suffering and the "tragic" or terrible events of the main character(s) of the play.

Scholars believe Shakespeare saw parallels between the political uncertainty of Caesar's rule and the ending of Queen Elizabeth I's reign. Due to the uncertainty of the Queens well being, the common people grew restless; and the secrecy the Queens Ministers lead to rushed conclusions and riots. Seeing this, Shakespeare feared history would repeat and follow a similar path to that of Caesar's, resulting in a protracted and bloody civil war.

What was Shakespeare's Intent?

Based on the political atmosphere surrounding the history of Julius Caesar, many speculate Shakespeare wrote Julius Caesar to bring light to alarming political circumstances that were taking place in his life.

What is a Genre?

A genre a category of artistic composition that is characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. Shakespeare's plays are in the genre of a "drama" meaning each of his plays has specific similiar elements that allow it to fall into this classification.
