The students will be divided into collaborative groups. They will be given a budget of 40 dollars. They will be asked to create a meal menu for their group that falls within their budget. The group will research dinner menus and grocery prices. The students will select (buy) their ingredients for their meal. The student will use addition and subtraction to buy their ingredients and to remain within their budget. The students will create two posters. One poster will be a representation of thier meal and the other poster will be a breakdown of the money spent and the amount of money they have left.

The class is made up of 25 second graders of various matematical ablities. The students are familiar with using technology as a form of reasearch.

Anchor

TTW introduce the project by asking students who plans their meals and who buys the groceries for those meals. TTW lead a discussion on meal planning and working with a budget. TTW then ask the students if they believe they could create and shop for a meal on a budget for a small group of their peers.

Task

TTW explain that the task is to create a meal for their small group on a budget of 40 dollars. TSW use online resources to research their menu and the price of the ingredients needed for their meal. The small group will be required to create two posters. One poster will have pictures of thier meal and the second poster will be a summary of their spending and must also include the amount of money they have left.

Directions

1. The class will be divided into groups of 4. 2. Each group will be given the project rubric. 2. TSW use discussion, a Chromebook, and online resources to research and decide upon a meal for their small group. 3. TTW also use a Chromebook to research prices of the ingredients for their meal. 4. TSW then pretend purchase the items necessary to create their meal. TSW use addition and subtraction to add and remove items from their purchase list to ensure they remain within their 40 dollar budget. TSW rework menu and purchase items as necessary to remain within budget. 5. TSW use crayons, colored pencils, scissors, glue, and/or old magazine pictures to create one poster that will represent the meal they have planned for their small group. 6. TSW create one poster that begins with 40 dollars, and subtract each item they have purchased for their meal. The poster should also include the amount of money that is left over.

Student Choices

1. TSW decide if the meal will be breakfast, lunch, or dinner. 2. Each group will decide the roles and responsibilites of their members. 3. TSW determine which online resources they will use for research and purchases. 4. TSW be allowed to draw their final poster contents or they will be allowed to cut pictures from old magazines to complete their posters.

Student-Inquiry

TSW use online resources to locate and evaluate prespecitive items for thier menu. TSW use online resources to identify prices for items on thier menu.

Collaboration and Teamwork

TSW work colaboratively within a smal group to gather information about menus, food prices, addition and subtraction of money, and creation of posters to demonstrate the outcome of this project.

TTW mointor groups as they work. TTW ask questions to guide student learning.TTW provide feedback and additional information as needed to enhance student learning and ensure a positive outcome of projects.
