« Googie » refers to a futuristic architectural style of the modern age in the 1950s, in Los Angeles. It is inspired by a dream of space and the jet engine. It is defined by geometric shapes, bold colours. It is a cartoonish style. (3e 4-5-6 students)Googie architecture is most represented in Los Angeles, California. It was developped in the 1950s and 1960s by the architectect John Lautner. It originated with a coffee-shop called « Googie’s ». It was to sell hamburgers. In the 1950s, there was a boom in cars and drivers couldn’t see the signs, so they needed to grab people’s attention. It has visual characteristics : a colourful palette, the colours are very flashy and odd futuristic shapes. It advertised restaurants, car washes, hotels, etc. (3e 1-2-3 students - Lesson 1)

What is "Googie" ?

The Googie style : living (in) the future ?

The Jetsons imagined a future in which robots would cook and serve food. And it has become a reality (microwave oven, industrial food). The show thought a world in which people would watch TV on a flat screen, at home. The Jetsons imagined a future in which a machine would replace dentists. It hasn’t happened but we have electric toothbrushes.
