What do we know about him?

George Orwell was born as Eric Arthur Blair on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, British India (now part of present-day India).He grew up in England and attended prestigious schools such as Eton College, after getting scholarship.Orwell served as a police officer in Burma*(now Myanmar) from 1922 to 1927. However, his time in Burma had a profound impact on him.He adopted the pen name "George Orwell" in the late 1930s.Died from from tuberculosis at the age of 46.

In 1933, Orwell lived among the poor and homeless in Paris and London, Immersing himself in the lives of those marginalized by society. This firsthand experience informed his later works. Including his well-known, first full-length work Down and Out in Paris and London.

Orwell fought in the Spanish Civil War as part of a left-wing militia and was wounded in action. His time in Spain and disillusionment with various political factions would shape his opposition to totalitarianism, and give him inspiration to write his first big book Homage to Catalonia and his most famous book - 1984

Eileen O'Shaughnessy

Orwell married Eileen in 1936. She was a fellow writer and Orwell's partner during his time in Spain. She was the first to tell him, that NKVD was after him.Unfortunately, their marriage was cut short when Eileen passed away in 1945.Some scholars believe that Eileen had a large influence on Orwell's writing. It is suggested that Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four may have been influenced by one of Eileen's poems, End of the Century, 1984

Orwell and Eileen adopted a son named Richard Horatio Blair, who was born in 1944.Richard was their only child. Although Orwell did not have biological children, he had a close bond with Richard and cared for his well-being.

Sonia Brownell

Orwell married Sonia in 1949, shortly before his death. She was an editor and became Orwell's literary executor. Sonia played a crucial role in preserving and promoting Orwell's works after his passing.After the death of his first wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy, Orwell became desperately lonely. On 13 October 1949, he married Brownell, only three months before his death from tuberculosis.Sonia is believed to be the model for the heroine of Nineteen Eighty-Four, the girl who brings love and warmth to the middle-aged hero, Winston Smith.

How Eric Blair became George Orwell

The choice of the name "George Orwell" was not arbitrary. "George" was chosen as a simple, common name, representing the average person. It reflected Orwell's desire to connect with the everyday struggles and experiences of ordinary individuals. "Orwell" was inspired by the River Orwell in Suffolk, England, which held personal significance for him as a place where he spent time and felt a sense of attachment.

Eric Blair became "THE Orwell" — a literary figure whose impact extends far beyond his original identity. His chosen name became synonymous with intellectual integrity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to exposing the truth, making George Orwell an enduring and influential literary figure.
