The Special Education Process
As a teacher, your role in the special education evaluation process is to provide valuable input and observations about a student's academic performance and behavior. This information helps the evaluation team assess a student's unique learning needs a determine their eligibility for special education services.
Summary
Definition of Assessment
"Information that is collected on a student to determine their present levels of performance as well as to see what they should be able to do (goals) through coaching, teaching and services provided as supports."
For the Student
This team decides a student's placement, services, IEP plan and overall goals for success.
Why?
Regular and special education teachers, administrators, school psychologist, educational evaluator, counselors, parents, and other service providers if needed.
Who?
Group of educators, service providers and parents who meet to discuss a student's progress and needs.

13 Catagories for Disabilities
School personnel may suspect the presence of a learning or behavior problem and ask the student’s parents for permission to evaluate the student individually.
The student’s classroom teacher may identify that certain symptoms exist within the classroom that seem to indicate the presence of some problem.
The student’s parents may call or write to the school or to the director of special education and request that their child be evaluated.

-Psychological evaluation including general intelligence, instructional needs, learning strengths and weaknesses, and social emotional dynamics-Developmental, social, and academic history based on interviews with parents and student-Physical examination (vision, hearing, and health...)-Classroom observation of the student in his or her current educational setting
