NELSON MANDELA AND APARTHEID On 18th July 1918 in Mvezo was born Rolihlahla Mandela. He studied law and he joined the African National Congress. In 1962 Nelson Mandela was arrested because the government blamed ANC for the shooting and Mandela was arrested. He was 27 years in prison and in 1990 president F.W. de Klerk freed mandela. In 1994 black Africans could vote. The ANC won the election, Mandela as the first black President in South Africa and abolished apartheid. He died on 5th December 2013 at 93 years old. A racial segregation system called apartheid was used in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. Black people were separated from white people. even though white people were in the minority they had political power.
PEOPLE In South Africa there are 57 million people that is constantly growing. Today South Africa is Called the rainbow nation because of its mixed population. There are people from Asia, Africa, Europe.
SPORTS The main sports are football, cricket and rugby. Sport played a very important part in ending of apartheid, Nelson Mandela used sport to promote the pace.
FLAG The difference culture living toghere are symbolized by the shape Y in the flag, the colours represent both Africa, British and Dutch flags
ANIMALS In South Africa there are the “big five on land” which are the elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard. But there are also the big five in water: the penguins, wales, seals, dolphins and sharks. Springbok is an unusual animal and the symbol of the county is the antelope.
SOUTH AFRICA One of the biggest countries in the world is South Africa . In South Africa there are three capitals: the economic capital is Pretoria, the judicial capital is Bloemfontein and legislative capital is Cape Town. Johannesburg is the biggest city but a quarter of the population lives in poverty. The main languages are English and Afrikaans. The most famous park is Kruger National park.
