Things to Consider with Flex: The Flex model can give students more autonomy. They can meet with teachers to discuss their goals or receive extra support. When considering using the Flex model, keep in mind: Flex Model gives students control over their pace and path. This can be a difficult transition for some students. The Flex model allows for an open space, where students flow among multiple formats, and classroom teachers can move easily among the students. The classroom teacher's role will change in a Flex model since the emphasis is on student autonomy. Teachers will spend most of their time providing face-to-face tutoring, enrichment to supplement online learning, and guidance for students.

Choose Your Own Path: When students can choose their own path learning adventure, they can enjoy voice and choice in the control and pace of the tasks. You can see the simple choice board with the three columns - Engage, Explore, and Explain. The classroom teacher will want to select the topic of the focus for the choice board. Then the teacher will organize the learning experience. Using the choice board - Engage, Explore, and Explain - students will select one activity from each column. In the Engage column, students will be provided with three options to engage with information. This can be a text, a video, a podcast, etc. The Explore column encourages students to investigate, research, and explore a topic. Students get to dig deeper to enhance their knowledge. Teachers can provide online and offline opportunities for students to learn more about a topic. Offline opportunities could be observations, interviewing others, or building something with materials from school or home. The Explain column gives students the option to share what they have learned from the previous two columns. The student might record a video, produce a piece of writing, create an infographic, etc.

THE FLEX MODEL FOCUSES HEAVILY ON ONLINE LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM SETTING. TEACHERS PROVIDE SUPPORT AND INSTRUCTION ON A FLEXIBLE BASIS AND ASSIST AS NEEDED. THIS MODEL ALLOWS STUDENTS TO BE IN CONTROL OVER THEIR LEARNING. A FLEXIBLE LEARNING MODEL IS HOW MOST EDUCATORS DEFINE PERSONALIZATION FOR STUDENTS. THE FLEX MODEL CAN WORK FOR CERTAIN STUDENTS UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES SINCE THE LEARNING IS DEPENDENT ON SELF-DIRECTION AND QUESTION-BASED INQUIRY. IT MAY TAKE SOME TIME FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS TO FEEL READY TO BECOME MORE OF A GUIDE AND FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE THE MOTIVATION AND AGENCY TO CONTROL THEIR LEARNING.

What Is Flex Learning?Flex learning presents the components of blended learning in a flexible course structure that gives students the option of attending sessions in the classroom, participating online, or doing both.

  • Students have the flexibility in how they attend.
  • Students can move on a personalized or small group schedule among learning modalities.
  • Students can participate either face-to-face or online in real-time (synchronous learning), at the time, place, and pace of the student's choosing (asynchronous learning), or both.
  • Synchronous learning is used frequently in this model.
  • Technology provides real-time online instruction, and recorded instruction, facilitates learning activities, communicates with students, houses resources and learning materials, and serves as a portal for receiving and returning assignments.

Creating a playlist allows classroom teachers to structure learning experiences in a personalized manner. The playlist can meet the needs of specific learners, provide students with more agency, and allow the teacher time to coach learners as they advance through the playlist. When you begin your playlist, select your target standards and skills to create a road map for your students. Choose the assessment strategy you will use to evaluate student progress toward learning objectives. Use a rubric to assess student learning at the end of the playlist. Things to Consider: When creating your playlist, think about what digital resources you want to use. If you want to insert a video, you might want to use something like Google Slides. Playlists can be for individuals, or you can strategically pair or group students to communicate and collaborate using a shared playlist. You can make the playlist synchronous or asynchronous. Think about the age of your students. Classroom teachers may want to have a few synchronous sessions to allow time for pulling individuals or small groups of students into conferencing sessions. If the teacher is working online with students, breakout rooms can be formed so there can be checks along the way as students progress through their playlist. Think about how you want to track students' progress while using a playlist. A spreadsheet with the title of the playlist would allow classroom teachers to keep track of progress. Have a column for student names and a column for each learning activity from the playlist. This spreadsheet will be helpful when having conferences with students. To differentiate a playlist, make a copy of the digital document and modify it. To personalize a playlist, the classroom teacher can craft a teacher checkpoint to monitor progress. The teacher and student can decide together what is needed.
