B.A., Physical Anthropology, Stony Brook University I always knew I had an interest in nature and conservation, but I was told as a teenager that I was more talented at liberal arts than at sciences. I majored in Anthropology, but found myself pulled towards studies of evolution, primatology, and conservation of historical landmarks and ecological sites.
Graduating in a Recession Unsure about pursuing higher degrees in Anthropology and graduating in a recession, I turned towards web development, a hobby of mine. This hobby turned into a set of important skills that carried me through some of our country's tough economic times.
Lockheed-Martin Initiative During the intervening years, taking some courses here and there, I discovered I had a latent talent for (and interest in) science, particularly chemistry. After marrying, and moving to Florida, I applied to UCF to pursue a Chemistry degree. However, a grant-funded initiative to increase the number of highly-qualified teachers led to me steering toward a Master's in teaching, with a chemistry specialization.
Teaching in a Public School... ...is no joke, and certainly not for the faint of heart. I learned some very harsh (and very important) lessons in my seven years as a public school teacher. However, I absolutely loved my students and loved my subject. Though teaching is not the right career for me, I will dearly miss the connections I got to develop each year, especially with my AP Chemistry students.
The final treasure After my wife's recent graduation, it's my turn to return to school and switch careers (one last time), returning to my love of nature and conservation. The job outlook for biology scientists (especially with soil and hydrology specializations) is good in Orlando, with our ever-growing need to balance human demands with ecological sustainability. One day, I would love to retire by working as an educator in a wildlife or ecological preserve. In the meantime, I intend to enjoy some newfound opportunities to spend more time outside, take more walks in the sunshine, and get a little dirty after far too much time spent behind a desk.
I married the love of my life in 2015, and we moved to Orlando shortly after!
Bamboo lemurs have a specialized digestive tract that allows them to safely digest the cyanide present in the local bamboo. Certain subspecies even specialize in digesting certain parts of the plant!
A semester abroad in Madagascar was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, studying lemurs and medicinal plants at the Ranomafana preserve.
While commercial web development wasn't for me, working in the private sector has its perks, such as great salaries and work-funded trips! I received an award for excellence in e-commerce work at a convention in Las Vegas.
One of my wife and my favorite hobbies is cooking together, especially delicious vegetarian dishes, such as this homemade stir-fried rice with fried tofu.
Marley, our youngest family member, adopted us by wandering up to us on the street and refusing to leave. Three years later, he's still just as strong-willed!
Hazel, a gorgeous green-eyes tortie, is a bit of a loner but can be convinced to hang with the family through gentle chin scratches and churu treats.
Apples is a playful pup with a powerful bark! She loves chasing lizards, taking walkies, and chewing everything she can get her little paws on.
Pandemic teaching at its finest, my web skills came in pretty handy when juggling in-person and online teaching!
My wife, graduating from UCF with her B.S. in Environmental Engineering just last year! Though older than most students, we support each other in following our dreams, even if they've been delayed.
