WHOLE-CLASS ACTIVITY
Honey is a sweet, thick, sugary solution made by bees. The first step in making honey begins when field bees fly from flower to flower collecting the sweet nectar from the flowers. With their tongues, the nectar is sucked out by the field bees and stored in sacs within their bodies. After filling their sacs with these sweet juices, the field bees fly back to their beehive and the stored nectar is regurgitated into the mouths of house bees. These house bees then add enzymes from their bodies to the nectar. Lastly, the nectar is stored in a cell of a honeycomb. Over time, the nectar ripens and becomes honey. When the honey is ready, it is collected by the beekeeper from the beehive and put into jars that are later delivered to the shops
How is honey made?
- In small groups, read the text in the handout.
- Identify the the genre of the text (explantion, information report, lab report, argument).
- Underline verbs in passive voice.
- Discuss why the passive might have been used rather than the active voice.
Group activity
- Tell about the genre and the content of text you have read.
- Give us examples of passive voice used in the texts and say why the text uses them.
