For over 100 years fraternities and sororities have been a part of the campus life of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The Divine 9 consist of 9 Greek letter fraternities and sororities. These organizations were founded between 1906 and 1963. They are called Greek organizations because Greek letters comprise each groups name.

What is the Divine 9?

Black fraternities and sororities were formed for several reasons one of them being that during this time in America had Jim Crow laws that oppressed Blacks and kept them separated in many public spaces. Black students attending white colleges and universities were not allowed to join white fraternities and sororities. Just as in larger society, Blacks were discriminated against on college campuses. Black Greek organizations were formed to create a safe space for Black college students to support one another and to bring about social change.
