The Anglo-saxons invasion
In the 5th century barbarian raiders from northern Germany invaded Britain. They were the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. Initially the Celtic population tried to resist this invasion but in the 6th century the Anglo-Saxons established in Britain the Heptarchy comprising seven kingdoms which then united to form the Kingdom of England.
The Anglo-Saxons settled into small tribes constituting a few local communities, with a political leadership that was simple, informal and had military significance. The Anglo-Saxons settled in villages in groups of 4/20 people. For the construction of their structures, the first Anglo-Saxons didn't use stone, but wood for the walls, and straw for the roofs. Their houses were rectangular huts. The elite had simple houses, with a central fire and a hole in the roof to let the smoke out. The house were square or rectangular.
The organization
The language of the Anglo-Saxons is the Old English.Old English was a mixture of the languages spoken by the three Germanic tribes, that in the 6th century invaded Britain(the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes). Old English is different from modern English for spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. The literature of old English was first communicated orally. The poem or tale changed a lot before put down in written form by the monks. The poet, was very important because they know all the stories and the legend about their clan. An example of an Anglo-Saxon poem is Beowulf, the longest Anglo-Saxon poem of the 8th century
The language
For the first time the Anglo-Saxons were a pagan culture. After Saint Augustine of Canterbury, sent by Pope Gregory the Great, converted the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity.
The art of the Anglo-Saxons concerned the working of metal to form jewels, fibulae, ornate weapons, and other objects preserved in the British Museum in London.
