Foreword
The term "globalization" indicates a very large set of phenomena, connected to each other with the growth of economic, social and cultural integration.Some studies show that this phenomenon is not recent, in fact between 1840 and 1914 there was the first wave of globalization, thanks to the development of new steam ships and railways. In 2000, the International Monetary Fund identified four different basic aspects of the phenomenon, such as:
- trade and transitions;
- investment;
- migration;
- dissemination of knowledge.
The term "deglobalization", that is to say the overcoming of globalization by facilitating local markets, indicates the tendency to move towards a less interconnected world.Two conclusions emerge from several studies: globalization slows down but is not non-existent; true deglobalization is not yet being experienced.
Subsistence economy
Subsistence economy is an economy that provides a minimum standard of living compared to subsistence agriculture, which will exist as long as human beings live on the globe. During the 50s and 60s the idea spread that the subsistence economy should disappear, and so, according to the economy, it was divided into two sectors: the traditional one and the modern one. Over time, the subsistence economy is no longer considered an economic action, but a state of poverty.
Subsistence economy in the past
In Europe, during the Middle Ages, the economy was based on agriculture and on the work of land farmers who usually owned the highest social class.The term Core Business refers to an economic-productive activity that allows a company to be able to stay on the market.
Subsistence economy today
Subsistence economy
Nowadays the subsistence economy is exercised in:
- more isolated regions of developing countries, such as equatorial and tropical forests, such as Indonesia, Congo, Amazonia;
- regions of large deserts, such as the Sahara;
- mountainous regions that are difficult to access, such as Tibet and the Andes.
Subsistence economy and deglobalisation
The links between deglobalization and the subsistence economy are:
- Deglobalization can promote the subsistence economy by encouraging local production and consumption and reducing the dependence on imported products on communities;
- Deglobalization can reduce competition between countries and improve cooperation between nations;
- The subsistence economy can help reduce social and economic inequalities by creating local job opportunities and promoting access to goods and services for people who otherwise would not be able to purchase them at affordable prices.
- Deglobalization and subsistence economy can be considered two sides of the same coin, this is because both aim to create a more sustainable economy locally and globally.
Focus
The subsistence economy in Africa which is mainly based on agriculture and fishing is influenced by economic and political phenomena, such as wars and poverty, which impede food security. In some rural areas it has also been affected by the extraction of natural resources, such as oil and gas, leading to the disabling of agriculture and the loss of farmland.
On the African continent, the most traded goods and resources are:
- Oil and gas;
- Mineral resources;
- Agricultural products;
- Timber and forest products;
- Animal products;
- Fish and seafood;
- Textiles and clothing.
Some of the main impacts in Africa are:
- Poverty;
- Unemployment;
- Illiteracy;
- Health;
- Corruption.
