The United States was formed from thirteen British colonies in 1776.

A colony is a region of land that is under the political control of another country.British ColoniesThe 13 colonies were a group of settlements that became the original states of the United States of America.

Important Facts about the Colonies
- In 1607 English settlers founded Jamestown, Virginia—the first permanent English settlement in North America.
- Queen Elizabeth wanted to establish colonies in the Americas in order to grow the British Empire and to counter the Spanish.
- New York City was originally called New Amsterdam and was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland.
Important Facts about the Colonies
- Massachusetts was named after a local tribe of Native Americans.
- In the New England colonies, since most people lived in the towns, there were enough people to support a public school.
- Families helped to support the schools with firewood, money, food, produce, and fish.
The colonies are often divided up into three regions: New England Colonies Connecticut Massachusetts Bay New Hampshire Rhode Island
