Caroline Dean
Week 13: Memory
British plant biologist known for her research on the molecular mechanisms that control flowering time in plants (2).
cONTRIBUTIONS
CONTRIBUTIONS Caroline Dean has made significant contributions to the field of plant biology, particularly in the area of flowering time regulation and epigenetics. Some of her major contributions include:
- The discovery of the FLC gene which plays a critical role in regulating the timing of flowering in Screenshot from YT (3) response to changes in temperature and other environmental cues (2).
- This discovery has lead to scientists to understand epigenetic memory in plants.
- Dean's research showed that FLC expression is regulated by epigenetic modifications.
- These modifications act as a type of "memory" that allows plants to remember changes in temperature over time and adjust their flowering accordingly. This is the vernalization pathway, a molecular pathway that controls flowering time in response to prolonged cold exposure (3) .
- In other words, repressing FLC expression is an important step in the vernalization process, which enables plants to flower after exposure to prolonged periods of cold temperatures. When FLC is expressed at high levels, it prevents other genes involved in flowering from being expressed.
