The KCSD 5-8 Summer Academy is for all incoming 5-8 Scholars from both M. Clifford Miller Middle School and J. Watson Bailey Middle School and will take place July 10th-AUGUST 4TH, Monday-Friday 7:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The 5-8 Summer Academy will have a Math & ELA focus as well as social-emotional programming provided by our Community Partners. Transportation is provided and the doors open at 7:45 a.m. Scholars cannot be dropped off before 7:45 a.m. and need to be picked up by 1:00 p.m. Breakfast & lunch are provided for FREE!DROP OFF: Doors will open at 7:45 a.m. Drop off/walkers will enter MCM through the "G" Doors located by the Gym. Please enter MCM through the back entrance by GRUNER FIELD and drive around to the front of the building for drop off at the “G” Doors. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN STAFF PARKING LOT TO DROP SCHOLARS OFF!!! Bus Scholars will enter the building through the "B" doors next to MCM's bus turnaround. PICK-UP: Walkers & Pick Up Scholars will leave MCM through the "G" doors beginning at 1:00 pm. Please do not ask your Scholar to meet you in the parking lot, as that places Scholars weaving in and out of traffic. Bus Scholars will exit MCM through the "B" doors and get on their buses. CELL PHONES: Scholars are expected to arrive to the 5-8 Summer Academy focused and prepared to work. Cell Phones are NOT allowed during learning time. Scholars are expected to place their cell phones in the phone holders in each classroom. If a Scholar is caught on their phone, it will be confiscated by their teacher(s) and returned at the end of the day. If a Scholar’s cell phone is taken for a 2nd time it will be turned into Mrs. Smith’s office, and a parent/guardian will need to come in to pick it up.

During the 2022 5-8 Summer Academy, The Family of Woodstock supported the SEL needs of our incoming 5th Graders by focusing on creating healthy and supportive classroom environments. Lessons included goal setting, decision making, identifying and managing emotions, effective communication, relationship building, and conflict resolution.

During the 2022 5-8 Summer Academy, Cornell Cooperative worked with our scholars on the topic of Entomology; or the study of insects. Scholars studied basic insect anatomy and invented their own insects out of clay. Scholars also explored insect behavior by interacting with live crickets and beetles in the classroom. Scholars also completed a final project with the insect collections they created, and some of this work was displayed at the Ulster County Fair.

During the 2022 Summer Academy, The Peaceful Guardians Project provided Scholars with the opportunity to learn about different parts of the world through drumming. Scholars studied rhythms from Senegal, Mali, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. The Peaceful Guardians Project also supported the SEL development of our Scholars through readings from the short stories Tito and the Bridge Brigade. Readings were done in English and Spanish to help support our ENL population.

During the 2022 5-8 Summer Academy, M. Clifford Middle School became a jobsite for the Ulster County Summer Youth Employment Program. KCSD Scholars now attending the High School worked with a team of four teachers in Grades 6-8 to help prepare for Summer Academy and provide mentoring and classroom support to our 5-8 Scholars.
