Elements of Plot

Read the following slides to learn the essential elements of plots.

The beginning of a story is where the characters and setting are introduced.

  • For example, in the story "The Three Little Pigs," the exposition is when we learn about the pigs personalities.

The part of the story where the main character is introduced to a conflict or problem and begins taking action to resolve it. This causes more problems and complications, making the story more interesting.

  • In "The Three Little Pigs," the conflict arises when the pigs begin to build their homes and we meet the hungry wolf.

Exposition (The Basic Situation)

Complication (The conflict)

Rising Action

One (or more) character is in crisis. It begins with the conflict and ends with the climax.

  • The wolf going to each pig's house to blow it down can be described as the rising action.

Climax

The point of highest emotion; the turning point; the point at which the outcome of the conflict can be predicted.

  • When the wolf cannot blow down the house made of brick, we can predict that he may not get to eat.

Falling Action

This rounds out and concludes the action; the struggles are over.

  • In some versions of the story, we find the wolf climbing down the chimney into a fire.

resolution (Denouement)

Resolution of character’s crisis.

  • The pigs are safe and sound in the end.
