For practical purposes, this was not the end of the voting rights struggle for African Americans. Because of widespread discrimination in many states, including the use of poll taxes, grandfatherclauses, and literacy tests, and other more violent means, African Americans were not assured basic voting rights until President Lyndon BainesJohnson signed the Voting Rights Act in 1965. Women were denied the right to vote until 1920, when the 19th Amendment was ratified. Prior to that, women had only been able to vote in select States. Federal elections occur every 2 years, on the first Tuesdday after the first Monday in November. Every member of the House of Representatives and about one-third of the Senate is up for reelection in any given election year. A president election is held every fourth year. Federal elections are administered by State and local governments, and the specifics of how elections are conducted differ between States. The Constitution and laws of the United States grant States wide lattitude in how they administer elections.

One of the most important rights of American citizens is the franchise - the right to vote. Originallly under the Constitution, only white male citizens over the age of 21 were eligible to vote. This shameful injustice has been corrected and voting rights have been extended several times over the course of history. Today, citizens over the age of 18 cannot be denied the right to vote on the basis of race, religion, sex, disability, or sexual orientation. In every state except North Dakota, citizens must register to vote, and laws regarding the regisstration process vary by State. The path to full voting for all American citizens was long. The franchise was first extended to African Americans under the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution, passed during the Reconstruction period of the Civil War. These amendments provided that all male citizens, regardless of their race, must receive equal treatment under the law and not be deprived of their rights without due process. The 15th Amendment is specifically dedicated to protecting the right of all citizens to vocte, regardless of race.

CeThe smaller upper chamber is always called the Senate, and its members generally serve longer terms, usually four years. The larger lower chamber is most often called the House of Representatives, but some states call it the Assembly or the House of Delegates. It members usually serve shorter terms, often two years. Judicial Branch State judicial branches are usually led by the State supreme court, which hears appeals from lower-lever State courts. Court structures and judicial appointments/elections are determined either by legislation or the State constitution. The supreme court focuses on correcting errors made in lower courts and therefore holds no trials. Rulings made in State supreme courts are normally binding: however, when questions are raised regarding consistency with the US Constitution, matters may be appealed directly to the United States Supreme Court.

Executive BranchIn every state, the executive Branch is headed by a governor who is directly elected by the people. In most states, other leaders in the executive branch are also directly elected, including the ieutenant governor, the attorney general, the secretary of state, and auditors and commissioners. States reserve the right to organize in any way, so they often vary greatly with regard to executive structure. Legislative BranchAll 50 States have legislatures made up of elected representatives, who consider matters brought forth by the governor or introduced byi ts members to create legislation that becomes law. The legislature also approves a State's budget and initiates tax legislation and articles of impeachment. The latter is part of a system of checks and balances among the three branches of government that mirrors the Federal system and prevents any branch from abusing its powerExcept for one State, Nebraska, all States have a bicameral legislature made up of two chambers: a smaller upper house and a larger lower house. Together the two chambers make State laws and fulfill other governing responsiblities. (Nebraska is the lone state that has just one chamber in its legislature).

Good job!

Which State doesn't have two chambers in its legislature ? Put the letters back in the correct order.

Youth in Politics: why it's important and why you should get involved

The contemporary political climate holds immense tension. Common discussion in the day-to-day lives of citizens include Black Lives Matter, climate change, racism, and a multitude of other deep-rooted issues. Despite the current relevance of these topics, each issues is rooted within the foundations of the government - an aspect we are all affected by. We may not be physically present at protests nor directly affected by a new bill, but each decision within politics acts as the irst part of a chain reaction. Given the current polarity of American politics, certain issues and decisions are often overlooked by teenagers. The threat of being deemed ignorant or unintelligent by peers weighs heavily on us all, with the notion that our voices are irrelevant. This could not be further from the truth. In some states, you can pre-register to vote at 16. This ability was studied by Anthony Fowler at the University of Chicago, who found that allowing future voters to pre-register increases both registration and turnout by 2.1 percentage points. Waiting to care for politics until you turn 18 means a lack of understanding, knowledge, and subsequently a lack of ability to make political choices that are important to you. By informing yourself early on, you can be better prepared to vote for candidates who have the same priorities as you, whether that be climate change, immigration, or abortion. You can encourage other around you to do the same. Use your voice by casting your vote. In 2016, less than half of citizens ages 18 to 29 voted in 2016's presidential election, compared to 71% of those 65+. How sad is it that the very generation whose future will be affected by those being elected into office, isn't even voting? We are letting a generation that won't have to deal with the effects of their actions make decisions that will affect our generation's future. You can't expect older politicians to be able to address and fulfill all young people's needs. But by participating in politics at a young age, you have the opurtinity to make a change. Andrew Yang brought up several great points in his response. Politics, a lot of the time, can seem uninteresting to our generation. With the rise of social media, many politicians have used platforms like Instagram and Tiktok to engage with young voters. There isn't just one way to get involved in politics, there are so many different ways to acquire information and get involved. Our democracy was created to give people what they want. For our government to best reflect the needs and wants of citizens, it is up to us to make a change. Young people hold valuable information and the knowledge to make the changes that previous generations have not.
