The Battle of Vicksburg was a Union win that was fought on the Mississippi River. Jefferson Davis was the Confederate president, and he said that Vicksburg was holding the south together. Since Davis said that, president Abe Lincoln said that Vicksburg was the “key” and the war could not end until the “key” was in the Unions possession. John C. Pemberton was the general for the Confederate and was in charge of protecting the Mississippi River and Vicksburg. The Battle of Vicksburg started in 1862 and ended on July 4 1863. The Confederates surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant making it a Union victory. Five days after was the Battle of Port Hudson, another victory for the Union. The Union split the Confederacy in half since they had control of the Mississippi River and Vicksburg.

Union army commander George B. McClellan had General Charles Stone send people over the Potomac River to find where Confederate Nathan Evans troops were on October 20, 1861. Captain Chase Philbrick thought a line of trees were tents and reported back that he had found where Evans troops were. The following morning Charles Devens was sent to attack that so-called troop. When he got there, there was nothing more then trees. Edward Baker was a U.S. Senator and he reinforced Charles Devens with four boats to transport his men. Edward Baked was killed later that evening by Evans and his troop. McClellans troop didnt know that this battle would haunt them in the end. McClellans troop ended up losing due to many of them being drowned and many others surrendered.

The Chickamauga Battle was a win for the Confederate. The Confederate started with 65,000 forces. In the process of winning this battle they lost roughly 20% of their force which was 18,000 casualties. While the Union started with 60,000 forces and only had 16,000 casualties. The Battle of Chickamauga was the second bloodiest battles right behind the Gettysburg at number one. After Braxton Braggs forces crossed a creek he separated them into two wings. General James Longstreet commanded the left side while General Leonidas K. Polk commanded the right side. Braggs and his forces were the first to fire, and in the end they won the battle.

General Ambrose E. Burnside only lasted a one campaign so he got replaced by Joseph Hooker. During the battle of Chancellorsville Battle Joseph Hooker, a Union General, had roughly 97,000 troops. While Robert E. Lee, a Confederate General, had roughly 57,000 troops. On the morning of May 1, 1863, the troops met at the Zoan Church near Chancellorsville where Major General Lafayette pushed back the start of the battle. The battle lasted from April 30th- May 6th 1863. In the end it was yet another win for the Confederacy.

The Battle of Cold Harbor involved 108,000 Union forces and 62,000 Confederate forces. It started on May 31, 1864 and ended as a Confederate victory on June 12, 1864. It happened near Richmond Virginia. Ulysses S. Grant was the general for the Union forces at the time. During the Battle of Cold Harbor had almost 13,000 casualties. While Robert E. Lee, the Confederate general, had 5,000 casualties. This battle was the last great victory Robert E. Lee had.
