He was attending a comedy show where he got shot. Booth had made an escape out the back door of the theater. He rode on his rented horse right out of Washington. As Booth made his way into Maryland, he met up with a man named David Harold. They both moved into Virginia but came across Confederate soldiers. Harold surrendered but Booth refused. He was later found in a barn in Virginia. For 12 days Booth had been the most wanted man in the whole United States. A $100,000 reward was for who could turn them in.

The Escape from Libby Prison was one of the most famous attempted escapes from the Civil War. During February 1864, 109 Union prisoners tried escaping from a tunnel they had been digging for months. Earlier escapes had ended badly but this “Great Escape Plan” risked getting caught by the prison officials. The Union prisoners soon gathered that the officials were totally oblivious to this plan of theirs after one of the Union officers was found in a locked room in the cellar working on their plan to break out. Luckily, the Union officer came up with a quick lie and the Confederate prison official believed him. After lights went out on February 9th, the prisoners revealed the tunnel and quickly ran through. Roll call the next morning and the Confederate officers were stunned. Although they all successfully made it out of the prison, 48 men were recaptured, 59 made it back to the Union side, and two died on the way back.
