Fourth session: ELABORATION PHASE 1. VIDEO RECORDING Prepare a video to be recorded, you must create an astronaut and the profile of a fictional astronaut to present in class with the grammar and vocabulary seen in the previous sessions. Every member of the group must take part in the video (speaking, editing, recording, and writing the guidelines…) Time: 2-5 minutes. You will vote for the best group and will win an extra point for the final grade!

NASA is looking for a young, energetic and experienced astronaut to join in March. Must be a good professional and keen on science. Please apply in writing to Bill Nelson, giving details of qualifications, skills and previous experience and saying why you think you are suitable for the job. InstructionsWrite, at least, 3 paragraphs

Student Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this lesson plan, the students will be able to:

  • Develop a suitable character to be the new NASA astronaut using digital video recording and editing tools (CREATE).
  • Evaluate the contributions and ideas of the group members to reach a final product together (EVALUATE).
  • Prioritize strengths and weaknesses to create a character according to the material worked on in class (ANALYZE)
  • Outline the characteristics of a fictional character that meets NASA's requirements in a letter of application (APPLY).
  • Relate different skills to NASA's requirements for a person to be an astronaut (UNDERSTAND)
  • Recognize space-related vocabulary and concepts previously learned in past grades (REMEMBER).

LEARNING SITUATION One Giant Leap For Mankind Subject: English as a Foreign Language Level: 3rd year of Secondary Education / 14 to 15 years old. Materials: A computer with an Internet connection, a blackboard, speakers, one tablet per student, a worksheet, a digital camera or mobile phone to record a video, and different ICT tools. Timing: 5 sessions of 50 minutes each one. Grouping: 5 groups of 4 people each. Methodology: Student-centered, Communicative Language Teaching, PBL, Cooperative learning approach and the Metacognitive approach. Sessions: 1st session - Engagement phase (focused on listening) 2nd session - Exploration phase (focused on reading) 3rd session - Explanatory phase (focused on writing) 4th session - Elaboration phase (focused on speaking) 5th session - Evaluation phase Two final projects: - Written production (cover letter) - Oral production (video recording).
