3. A POLICY

1. SAFEGUARDING

Definitions: In our own words please describe…

JO

Safeguarding at WAGGGS means the actions we take to prevent harm and promote the welfare of the children and young people we work with and for. Of particular importance is the need to create safe and supportive spaces for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to participate in our work, to reduce risks and for any (safety and welfare) concerns to be raised and responded to.

SAFEGUARDING

is a system of laws, policies, regulations and services needed across all social sectors, especially social welfare, education, health, security and justice to support prevention and response to protection related risks

2. CHILD PROTECTION

the responsibility that organisations have to protect the children that they come into contact with and to protect them from harm from their staff, programs and their operations.

1. SAFEGUARDING

As we see it these are all the things inside the Member organisation, policies and procedures that organisations have to protect children from the organisation itself. These things fall withing the bigger parameter’s of child protection

2. CHILD PROTECTION

As we see it, these are things outside the Member organisation that are put in place to protect children and prevent harm

1. SAFEGUARDING

Safeguarding is prevent harm; child protection is how we respond to harm.

(1) Why is it important to understand the difference between safeguarding and child protection in a Guiding & Scouting Context?(2) Sorting Activity (3) What would you change or add to the explanations?

Feedback :-)

Time to Break & Stretch!

The Source & Horizon

1. Complete the horizon activity' on the Miro Board 2. Review a policy of your choice using 'REAL' (details on next page)

Take Home Tasks

Is it ‘learner-led?’ Does it feel that the end-user has been consulted or involved in the policy development?

Is it ‘accessible’? Can it be easily read and understood by all?

How ‘engaging’ is it? Does it demonstrate expectations clearly? Does the reader feel motivated and able to to follow the processes?

Is it ‘relevant’ to the person reading it? Is it based on current risks and the internal/external context of the organisation?

Review either your policy or another of your choice and consider how ‘REAL’ the policy is for the reader.

Any other thoughts about the document? Do you feel that ‘REAL’ is a useful tool to review policies?
