What inspired me to think about using poetry in the languages classroom?
Why should we be including poetry in our language teaching?

POETRY IN PRIMARY LANGUAGES
1. Reading and reciting poetry helps children to develop an appreciation of language and literature.

- Read aloud as a class.
- Groups of 3 or 4 take a line each
- Groups say their line in turn.
- Learn the line by heart.
- Recite the whole poem, group by group.
- Listen to the poem.
- Attempt a translation.
- Second attempt with a dictionary.
- Arrive at the meaning.
- Cut up and reassemble the poem.
- Learn the song.
- Choose between a literal translation and one that rhymes but is not 'word for word'.
- Discuss if the audience makes a difference.
