Effective management of slack time can help to ensure that a project is completed on time and within budget.
By identifying tasks with slack, project managers can prioritize their attention on critical path tasks and focus on ways to optimize the use of available time for non-critical path tasks. 
Positive slack indicates that there is flexibility in the task timeline, while negative slack indicates that the task is on the critical path and it cannot be delayed without delaying the entire project.  
It's the amount of time that a task can be delayed beyond its earliest start date or latest finish date without causing a delay to the project's completion date.
