Les romains repprenent et developpent les techniques mises au point par les grecs et inventent des grues et des trapes, afin de faire descendre des dieux du ciel, ou faire monter les fantome du monde des morts. Le public Romains raffole de ces réalisation féeriques
Décorations:
Dans le monde romain, les premiers théâtres étaient constitués de simples tréteaux de bois en estrade (pulpitum) : ils étaient démolis dès la fin de la représentation. Il n’y avait pas de gradins pour les spectateurs qui assistaient debout au spectacle (les gradins n’apparaissent qu’au IIe siècle avant J.-C., installés de façon toujours temporaire). En 55 avant J.-C., Pompée inaugure à Rome le premier théâtre de pierre permanent - officiellement le parvis d’un temple de Vénus, bâti en arrière de l’hémicycle - avec une cavea pour les spectateurs (enceinte semi-circulaire contenant les gradins) : ils s'y installent selon leur rang social.
