Let's learn more about Markings!

Before we get into the escape room...

Physical qualities always tell us something about characters, whether it be in literature, movies, TV shows, or art. Usually, in stories, characters are marked in specific ways to set themselves apart from others. The markings can be symbolic of their past, their coming-of-age story, and much more that is left to be discovered be readers/viewers/listeners. They may also represent the imperfections of a character or foreshadow the plot of the piece in a thematic manner.

Frankenstein's Monster

The allusion to Dante’s Inferno immediately connects Frankenstein’s monster to the idea of a monstrosity, something that should be feared. Dante’s monsters are described as fantastical creatures, most of which are to be feared; therefore, Frankenstein’s description effectively ostracizes the monster and marks him as undesirable, even though he is a much more complex character than his creator paints him to be. Frankenstein's physical deformities eventually equate him to having moral deformities, furthering the idea of how his markeings contribute to the way he is perceived by others.

“He was ugly then, but when those muscles and joints were rendered capable of motion, it became a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived.”
