past continuous

They are known by different names: past continuous, past continuous or past progressive. In the end, it is one of the most important and used verb tenses in English. For this reason and in order to improve your verbal and written expression when using it.

2. Offer context, that is, give information about facts or situations in a specific time. Last year, I was studying for the exams 3. Mention two or more past actions that happened at the same time. While my son was playing videogames, I was sleeping in his bedroom.

How is past continuous formed? The structures of the continuous past in their affirmative, negative and interrogative forms are as follows:

The past continuous in English is used for: 1. Express actions or states that were taking place in the past when another action or state interrupts or reinforces it. For example: I was walking when I saw an eagle

How and when is past continuous used?

El past continuous tiene claras diferencias con el past simple (pasado simple), las cuales se pueden resumir de la siguiente forma: El pasado simple es para actions que empezaron y terminaron en el pasado. El pasado continuo se usa para acciones que se estaban llevando a cabo en el pasado. Examples: Pasado simple: She watched a film yesterday (Ella vio una película ayer). Pasado continuo: She was watching a film yesterday when I called her (Ella estaba viendo una película ayer cuando le hablé). Cuando hay dos acciones consecutivas (primero ocurre una y después la otra), se usa el pasado simple, pero si las acciones son simultáneas, se usa el pasado continuo.

Differences between past simple and past continuous

They were regretting their decision to sell their house (Ellos se estaban arrepintiendo de su decisión de vender su casa).

When the present continuous is used with verbs of thought or reflection, this means that they are about recent ideas or about which one does not feel secure.
