Illyrians' territory

Phoenicians' territory

Piracy emerged in the 14th century BC, when Sea Peoples threatened the ships that sailed in the Aegean and Mediterranean waters. Many pirates came from poor urban areas to make money. The first pirates in history were the Phoenicians, the Illyrians and the Tyrrhenians, in Classical Antiquity.

ORIGIN OF PIRATES

PRIVATEERSThey were commissioned by governments. They went against rival countries. They were from the Caribbean and the Pacific coast of Central America.

BUCCANEERSOriginally, they were hunters of Catalan pigs. Later, pirates from the Caribbean Sea.

CORSAIRSThey were pirates who roamed the mediterranean.

NOT THE SAME AS PIRATES:

Modern piracy exists primarily in the South China Sea, regions use different piracy business models: Somalia is a state-owned hijacking operation, Gulf of Guinea pirates steal oil, and Asian pirates focus on sea robbery.

EVOLUTION OF PIRATES

Chinese piracy re-emerged in the early 16th century. More than 70,000 Chinese pirates operated in the region. Qing dynasty measures were unable to suppress piracy. It ended in the 1800s.

South China Sea Pirates

It is the most famous piracy. It initiated the Golden Age of Piracy. After Spain and Portugal claimed the World’s oceans, the American Colonists took advantage of the black market the pirates provided, and gave them refuge.

Caribbean Piracy

Barbary piracy lasted for centuries and terrorised shipping and coastal cities in the Mediterranean and Europe. It ended in 1830.
