Now that we have reviewed the unit's contents, it is time to put them into practice. To do so, we will conduct a case study called “HelloFresh Is Disrupting the Grocery Industry Using an Innovative Delivery Model and Deep Customer Insights.”

A substantial data-driven technology platform places us in a prime position to disrupt the food supply chain and fundamentally change the way consumers shop for groceries, "said Kai von Grambusch, chief data and analytics officer at HelloFresh. Not surprisingly, HelloFresh executives are looking for new ideas for customer needs, given its disruptive status.

DATA

It is one of the companies that has best known how to extract value from data. Thanks to this infrastructure, the company can generate over 13 billion dollars a year in the United States alone, where it has 4,300 stores and close to 2 million workers. In 2012, Walmart invested in the creation of 10 clusters made up of 250 processing nodes that allowed it to process more information than the United States government. The anecdote of how this supermarket was able to predict the impact of Hurricane Katrina and stock up better than the U.S. government itself is well known.

DATA

For HelloFresh, data provides the key to not only understanding customers’ likes and dislikes, but also predicting their preferences and needs. What recipes, ingredients, and meals might each household want to try, and when would they likely buy those meals? “Our legacy SQL database was difficult to scale, and it was hard to onboard new data and users, "said Kai von Grambusch." It also had slow performance. It would take hours to figure out how many boxes were shipped, and as we hired more analysts and data scientists, it became quite difficult to even maintain that level of performance.”
