- In 2001 the human development index (ISU) calculated by the National Human Deplovment Report, was 0.284; this data places Somalia among the 5 least developed nations in the world. There are also some small oil fields in the area.

- The economy is based on nomadic breeding and agricultural production which is the most important sector. It depends on humanitarian aid.

- with the military coup, Siad Barre imposed a regime of Marxist inspiration.
- In 1977, Somalia waged war against Ethiopia to conquer the Ogaden

- Since 2004, the Transitional Federal Parliament has adopted the Transitional Federal Government of the Republic (GFT) of Somalia which has established itself as one of the Transitional Federal Institutions of Government.
- In 2012, a new internationally supported government was installed and Somalia moved towards stability.
- in January 2013, the United States recognized the government of Somalia.

4. Thirty-year civil war A substantial portion of the Somali population emigrated because of the war. Most migrants are forced to spend years in refugee camps in Ethiopia or Kenya. The proportion of migrants seeking refuge in Yemen and the United Arab Emirates has increased in recent years.
