What makes sources reliable?

reliability of sources

01

Knowledgeable authorship

What's the author's professional background? How she/he/they gathered the information? What process was used to produce the information?Where was the information published? How can the author(s) correct mistakes that were already published?

Authority of a source

01

Leo Messi Antonio Vélez

Who's better expertise in the field of winning a FIFA World Cup?

Jmmmm....

Who has more knowledge OF composing songs?

What do you think we need to know to successfully answer this question?

And for the subject...

In history, we need to have the background information of the author of the text. If the author is a person, where did he/she/they study? Where is the author working? What are the most recent publications of the author? On the other hand, if the author is an institution, is this a renowned academic history? Is the institution an academic, non-profit, or governmental one?

The Museum of American Revolution is a non-profit organization that holds thousands of records on this period of time. It was opened in 2007 and is coordinated by the Ph.D. teacher in American History, Scott Stephenson

John Green is a famous Youtuber that explains several historical events. He went to the university to study English and has published several books

If you want to know more about the American Revolution, who do you believe more?

LET'S TAKE AN EXAMPLE

What's the point of view of the author?

Unfairly inclination/preferenceof something or someone. Biases canreproduce prejudices for or againsta group of people.

BIAS

Rather than judging a source, we need to interpret what perspective is been presented here, if that specific perspective might be biased, and where the biases are.

HOW CAN WE USE BIASES?

We need to take biases into account to understand why someone thinks like that. What makes this magazine defend this political tendency?

Authorship and perspective are important elements of primary sources

Primary sources can have biases

So, what about primary sources?

Think about a historical period that you're fond of. You really want to know more about this time, so you need to locate reliable primary and secondary sources to be knowledgeable, what sources would you choose and what information would you expect to use from this sources?
