1846 - The Irish Famine
1949 - Proclamation of the Republic of Ireland
1937- Irish Independence
1998 - Signing of the Northern Ireland Peace Agreement
1922-Constitution of the Irish Free State
The Great Famine massacres the Irish. For decades, Irish farmers had been suffering from appalling poverty. Totally dependent on potato cultivation, they had to face the blight that destroyed almost all their crops. This disaster led to a considerable depopulation of the country.
Eamon De Valera declares that the country no longer recognises the sovereignty of the King of England. He promulgates a republican constitution for Eire.
Negotiations between the British, Irish, Sinn Fein and David Trimble's Protestant party leaders lead to the Stormont Agreement. The latter advocated a quasi-common administration of the two Irelands in certain areas. The IRA was quite supportive of these compromises but the process was long and perilous.
An Irish Constitution is applied to the country. A bicameral parliament is established. Tensions ease and Ireland experiences some agricultural development until the Great Depression of 1929.
Ireland breaks its ties with the British Commonwealth and proclaims the Republic of Ireland or Eire. The two main political parties in the new republic are Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, both conservative.
