  • They were in India from 1674 to 1954
  • Started in 1673 when the “compagnie des indes orientales” got hold of a bit of land in Pondicherry.
  • They arrived “late” as England and Dutch companies arrived in the early 1600s, meaning thy had less possibilities to colonize
  • The total area became the “Établissements français dans l'Inde” these were 5 areas : Pondichéry, Karikal, Yanaon, Mahé, Chandernagor.
  • In the 1950s 300k people lived in these areas, more than half of them being present in the Pondicherry area.
  • Tensions with England and some skirmishes took place

French Presence in India

  • The British presence in India began in the early seventeenth century
  • the British East India Company began trading on the outskirts of the Mughal empire
  • The company's influence grew and British leaders spread control throughout the subcontinent.
  • By the 1760s they controlled most of present-day India
  • The East India Company was abolished and Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India in 1858.
  • Nineteenth century : Indians launched a powerful nationalist movement that led to their independence from Britain in 1947
  • But the process of partition was attended by mass migration and ethnic violence that has left a bitter legacy to this day

Mahatma Gandhi

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi 19 November 1917 – 31 October 1984 Indian politician and stateswoman who served as the third prime minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was India's first, and to date, only female prime minister and a central figure of the Indian National Congress. Gandhi was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, and wthe cumulative tenure of 15 years and 350 days makes her the country's second-longest-serving prime minister after her father. Her mother, Rajiv Gandhi, succeeded her in office as the sixth Indian prime minister
