MIGRATIONS

1 in 113 people forced to flee in the world: forced migrations reach the highest levels ever

  • That in itself is worrying, but the factors putting refugees at risk are also multiplying,” said Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “Frightening numbers of refugees and migrants die at sea every year on the mainland, people fleeing war find their way blocked by closed borders. Politics in some countries is increasingly gravitating towards restrictions on access to asylum procedures. Today the willingness of countries to work together not only for refugees but also for the collective human interest is being tested, and what really must prevail is the spirit of unity.

More and more people are forced to flee due to war and persecution.

Among the countries covered by the Global Trends report, Syria with 4.9 million refugees, Afghanistan with 2.7 million and Somalia with 1.1 million alone account for more than half of the refugees

"3 countries produce half of the world's refugees..."

About half of the world's refugees are children

Children accounted for 51 percent of the world's refugees in 2015, according to data. Many of them were separated from their parents or were traveling alone, which is of great concern. In all, there were 98,400 asylum applications from unaccompanied minors or minors separated from their families. This number, the highest ever recorded. This tragically shows how great an impact forced migrations around the world have on these young lives.

While forced migrations have reached unprecedented levels, few people have been able to return to their homes or have found other durable solutions.
