November 1975 The Green March was a strategic mass demonstration, coordinated by the moroccan government, to force Spain to hand back the so-called Western Sahara as it was moroccan first before the Spanish colonisation, to the kingdom. The Sahrawi people, which are the citizens of the desert area, wanted to form an independent state. The Green March, was the demonstration of some 350.000 Moroccans advancing several kilometres into the Sahara territory. HASSAN II MOSQUE
The Hassan II Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الحسن الثاني) in Casablanca, Morocco, built by the will of King Hassan II and inaugurated in 1993, is the largest mosque in Morocco by size and among the largest in the world. Built at the behest of King Hassan II, it cost about 500 million dollars, financed directly by the money of the Moroccan people. In the 1980s, the sovereign decided he wanted a building for Morocco that was like the symbols of other countries, such as the Statue of Liberty for the United States, the Colosseum for Italy or the Eiffel Tower for France. The Mosque therefore became the representative symbol of Morocco, a structure that represents the millenary tradition but at the same time is also innovation, considered among the most interesting examples of contemporary Moroccan architecture and engineering.
Curiosities about the mosque: •It is the largest mosque in Morocco and among the largest in the world •It has a laser beam that points in the direction of the holy city of Mecca 20,000 workers and 10,000 craftsmen were employed for its construction •It cost over $500 million •More than 300 people work there all year round
