The Hassan II Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الحسن الثاني‎) in Casablanca, Morocco, built by the will of King Hassan II and inaugurated in 1993, is the largest mosque in Morocco by size and among the largest in the world. Built at the behest of King Hassan II, it cost about 500 million dollars, financed directly by the money of the Moroccan people. In the 1980s, the sovereign decided he wanted a building for Morocco that was like the symbols of other countries, such as the Statue of Liberty for the United States, the Colosseum for Italy or the Eiffel Tower for France. The Mosque therefore became the representative symbol of Morocco, a structure that represents the millenary tradition but at the same time is also innovation, considered among the most interesting examples of contemporary Moroccan architecture and engineering.
