The conditions in organic farming systems are similar to those in free-range systems. Up to six chickens per square metre can be reared.

Ecologic

Contrary to logic, free-range chickens spend most of their time in conditions similar to those in pensystems. According to the standards, chickens in free-range systems must have access to the outdoors.

In pen systems they live so close together that nine chickens are forced to share one square metre.

Most hens live in conventional battery cages. These cages have a space allowance of 550 cm2 for each bird.
